Diferentes designações para várias perspectivas

 

A conferência "Alcácer Quibir: margens e contra-margens" surge na sequência de diversos projectos de investigação, uns já em desenvolvimento, outros ainda em fase de candidatura. Tendo trabalhado sobre o tema da guerra do século XVI, e estabelecidos contactos com colegas de vários centros de investigação, ficou demonstrada a potencialidade deste tema para uma abordagem multidisciplinar de grande actualidade. Compreender as fracturas políticas e culturais que ocorreram na geografia do Mediterrâneo de Quinhentos é ainda crucial para compreender os acontecimentos que hoje têm lugar nesta região.

A conferência tem dois objectivos:

1. Estabelecer um estado-da-arte para o estudo da Guerra na fronteira Europa / Norte da África, articulando um amplo espectro de temas: de uma perspectiva militar mais estrita a um ponto de vista cultural que inclui os objectos da vida quotidiana como o vestuário ou a joalharia, passando pelos cerimoniais e outras manifestações de poder, a escrita, e a musica.

2. A construção de uma rede para o desenvolvimento de actividades conjuntas com outros investigadores e centros de investigação: publicação de artigos, disponibilização de fontes primárias, e construção de um projecto exploratório a ser submetido à atribuição de fundos europeus.

 

Pretende-se discutir a batalha de Alcácer Quibir não como um objeto isolado, mas dentro de um conjunto de temas, alguns diretamente ligados ao evento de 4 de Agosto, outros que estão à margem do objecto principal.

A primeira sessão (AS MARGENS) é dedicada a questões militares / políticas. O quadro geoestratégico, que compreende a conjuntura política da dinastia Sádida, os dois planos em que os interesses portugueses e espanhóis se moveram, muitas vezes em direcções contraditórias; o longo processo de organização da expedição, incluindo a reestruturação do poder militar português e marroquino, que implicou a crescente influência da arte de guerra hispano-italiana em Portugal, e a afirmação do modelo militar otomano para o caso de Marrocos; o itinerário do exército, verdadeira cidade em movimento – a segunda mais populosa de Portugal, apenas atrás de Lisboa -  e o impacto final do confronto que teve lugar a 4 de agosto de 1578.

A segunda sessão (AS CONTRA-MARGENS) abrange vários aspectos da sociedade portuguesa na segunda metade do século XVI, discutidos num “largo espaço” de enfoque centrado em aspectos da vida quotidiana – vestuário, objectos da cultura material, representações de poder e cerimoniais de corte, poesia e prosa, e musica.

The "Alcácer Quibir: margens e contra-margens" conference is the consequence of several research projects, some already under development, while others submitted to application. After working over the theme of sixteenth century warfare, having established several contacts with other researchers from various investigation centers, the resulting scientific exchanges has shown that this theme still has enormous potential for multidisciplinary development. The understanding of the political and cultural fractures that occurred during the sixteenth century Mediterranean geography is still crucial to understand many contemporary events that are taking place within this region.

 

we pursue two objectives:

 

1. Establish a state-of-art for the study of the War in European/North African frontier, within a wide-range of themes that are closely interconnected: from the strict military perspective to a cultural point of view that includes everyday’s life objects, the prose and poetry, power representations, court cerimonies, and music.

2. The construction of a research network for developing future joint projects with other investigation centers and individual researchers: publication of material (articles, availability of sources) and research (exploratory project for applying for European funds).

 

The battle of Alcácer Quibir will be discussed not as an isolated object, but within a set of themes, some directly linked to the event of August 4th, others that are on the margins of the main object. 

 

The first session (AS MARGENS) will handle with military and political issues. The geostrategic framework, which comprises the political conjuncture of the Sa’adid dynasty and the two levels on which Portuguese and Spanish interests were moving, many times in contrary directions; the long process for the organization of the expedition, including the rebuilding of the Portuguese and Moroccan military power: the growing influence of Spanish/Italian art of war for the former, and Ottoman for Morocco. The itinerary of the army, a true city in movement - the second most populous of Portugal, just behind Lisbon - and the final impact of the confrontation that took place on August 4th, 1578.

The second session (AS CONTRA-MARGENS) will cover various aspects of Portuguese society in the second half of the sixteenth century, discussed in a "broad perspective" focusing on the aspects of everyday life - clothing, objects of material culture, representations of power and court ceremonials, poetry and prose and music.
